Complete Guide

Everything you need to know about Bucktory

Learn how to track your accounts, plan your budget, and project your financial future โ€” step by step.

What is Bucktory?

Bucktory is a personal finance app built around three core ideas: tracking your real balances, managing recurring income and expenses, and projecting your financial future. Unlike traditional budget apps, Bucktory works from your actual account balances rather than categories.

๐Ÿฆ

Accounts

Track all your bank, cash, credit, or investment accounts in one place.

๐Ÿ’ฐ

Income & Expenses

Define recurring income and expense items with optional start/end dates.

๐Ÿชฃ

Buckets

Set savings goals (buckets) and see when they'll be funded.

๐Ÿ“ˆ

Projections

Debt payoff timelines, net worth growth, and investment projections.

The Four Tabs

Bucktory has four main sections accessible from the bottom navigation bar.

TabWhat it shows
๐Ÿ“Š SummaryYour financial snapshot: account balances, this month's income & expenses, buckets, and projections at a glance.
๐Ÿ’ธ Cash FlowMonth-by-month breakdown of all income and expenses across a date range.
๐Ÿ“ˆ ProjectionLong-term projections: debt payoff plan, bucket fill plan, net worth, and investment growth.
โœ๏ธ EditAdd, edit, or delete accounts, income items, expenses, and buckets. Also where you receive income and pay expenses.

Summary

The Summary tab gives you a complete picture of your finances right now. At the top of the page you'll find four header buttons: Premium, Sync, Card order, and Settings. The sync button's icon and behavior differ for free vs. Premium users โ€” see Cloud Sync for details.

โ†•๏ธ Reordering cards

Tap the sort icon in the header to enter card sorting mode. While active, an info banner appears at the top and small โ–ฒโ–ผ arrows show up in the top-right corner of every card โ€” tap them to move a card up or down. Tap the sort icon again, or tap Done in the banner, to exit. Your custom order is saved automatically and remembered the next time you open the app.

๐Ÿฆ Accounts

Shows each account with its current balance. On the Android app, tap a card's header (Accounts, Income, Expenses, Buckets) to collapse or expand it. If an account uses a currency different from your base currency, a small currency badge appears next to its name. Accounts with interest configured also show an interest + tax badge with that account's own monthly amount. The footer displays Total Assets, Total Debt, and Net Worth. Tap Edit to go directly to account editing.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Income โ€” this month

Lists all income items active this month. Each row is tappable โ€” tapping it opens the same modal as the Al / Receive button, letting you log that the income arrived. If an item uses a different currency, a currency badge appears next to its name; items with a start/end date also show a date badge, and once received (or planned), a badge to the left of the amount shows that date. If you have savings accounts, a Savings - tax row also appears here. The footer shows Total Income, Total Expenses (with interest), and Monthly Net.

Tip: A green/red โœ“ badge next to an item means it was actually received or paid. A blue badge with no checkmark means it's only planned for that future date โ€” tap the item to see or change the details.

๐Ÿ’ธ Expenses โ€” this month

Lists all expense items active this month, with the same currency/date badges as Income. Tapping a row, or the ร–de / Pay button, opens the payment modal. Debt accounts also show an interest + tax row here. The footer shows Total Income, Total Expenses (+ interest), and Monthly Net.

๐Ÿชฃ Buckets

Shows each savings bucket with its linked accounts shown as badges (with each account's contributed amount) and progress toward the target. The footer shows total savings across all buckets.

โฑ Debt Progress & Savings/Interest Details

The Debt Progress card shows a progress bar toward paying off all negative-balance accounts. Its header has a checkmark button โ€” tap it to include or exclude archived accounts from the calculation. Monthly Interest Detail and Monthly Savings Detail cards appear only when you have accounts that actually generate interest or savings that month โ€” otherwise they're hidden entirely. For the full payoff schedule and timeline, see the Projection tab.

Cash Flow

The Cash Flow tab shows every income and expense item for each month in a date range you select. The header has Premium, Sync, and Settings buttons (no card sorting on this page).

Setting the date range

Use the Start and End date inputs at the top of the page to control which months are shown below, both in the chart and in the monthly cards. These are saved automatically and synced across devices.

Bar chart

Below the date range, a bar chart visualizes income vs. expenses for every month in your selected range, so you can spot trends at a glance before scrolling through the individual month cards.

Reading the cards

Below the chart, each month in the range gets its own card showing that month's income items, expense items, and (for the current month only) interest + tax. The footer of each card shows Total Income, Total Expenses, and Monthly Net. Items that have been received/paid this month show a โœ“ badge.

Quick Receive / Pay

Each month card has Receive (Al) and Pay (ร–de) buttons next to the section header, and every item row is itself tappable to open the same modal. There you select the item, the account, and the date, then confirm.

Tip: The Receive/Pay modal's date defaults to the 1st of the selected month card โ€” so if you tap Pay on the August card, the date pre-fills to August 1st.

Projection

The Projection tab simulates your financial future based on your current account balances, income, and expenses โ€” Bucktory's most important tab. The header is the same as Summary (Premium, Sync, Card order, Settings). All projections start from next month โ€” the current month's balance is treated as already settled.

โญ Hero card

At the top, a summary card shows a one-line status for your debts ("No debt" / "All debts paid off" / a projected closing date) and your buckets ("No bucket goals" / "All buckets full" / a projected fill date). This card is Premium-only โ€” free users don't see it at all; everyone still gets the detailed cards below it.

๐ŸŽฏ Goal order

Lists every negative-balance account and every bucket that has a goal, in the order they'll be paid off or funded. Use the โ†‘ โ†“ buttons to change the order. Each row also has a checkmark toggle: tap it to include or exclude that specific goal from the projection without deleting it โ€” useful if you want to plan around a debt or bucket temporarily. This order directly drives every calculation below it.

Tip: If you have no debt and no bucket goals, this card (and the two below it) are hidden and replaced with a short info message explaining what will make them appear โ€” you can dismiss that message permanently with the ร— button.

Target Payment Plan

Shows month-by-month how your debts and bucket goals are funded together, in your goal order โ€” once the debts ahead of it are paid off, surplus income moves on to fund the buckets that follow. This card can be collapsed/expanded, and a number input in its top-right corner controls how many months are shown. Each monthly row displays:

1
Payment capacity

Total income minus total expenses minus interest โ€” what's available that month to pay down debt or fund buckets. In the current month this uses your unreceived income and unpaid expenses instead of the full monthly totals.

2
Payment accounts & buckets

The negative-balance accounts and bucket goals being paid down or funded that month, in your goal order, with the amount applied to each โ€” shown as a +amount badge for buckets, alongside the running total vs. target once a bucket has one.

3
Interest + tax / Deficit interest + tax

The interest and tax cost for the month, based on each account's own configured rate. If your payment capacity goes negative instead, a "carried over" balance appears along with its own Deficit interest + tax โ€” this uses the separate Monthly deficit interest/tax rates from Projection settings, not any account's own rate, and represents the cost of letting that shortfall deepen instead of shrinking. For the current month only, the interest + tax field itself is an editable input.

Tip: The current month's interest + tax field is editable because your bank may not have charged (or finalized) it yet. Enter the amount that will be charged this month โ€” not an amount you've already paid. Entering an amount you've already paid as if it were still owed will make the projection think you still owe it, throwing off your Payment Plan and Net Worth Projection.
โš™๏ธ Max months shown

Use the number input at the top of the card: free accounts can enter up to 3 months, Premium can enter any number of months, or 0 for an unlimited view. This preference is saved and synced.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Target Timeline

A simpler, date-first view of the same plan: for each account or bucket in your goal order, it shows the exact month it will be paid off or reached. Free accounts only see the first goal in the list; Premium shows every goal, however many there are.

๐Ÿฆ Savings Projection

Shows how your Savings-type accounts will grow with compound interest over time โ€” separate from the debt/bucket plan above. Toggle between monthly and yearly view and enter how many months/years ahead to project in the card's top-right corner. If you have no savings account with a balance or monthly contribution, this card is hidden with an info message in its place. Free accounts see up to 6 months ahead in monthly view only; Premium unlocks the full range plus the yearly view.

Net Worth Projection

Projects your total net worth (all account balances combined) over time, accounting for income, expenses, debt payoff, bucket funding, and savings growth. Toggle monthly/yearly and enter how many months/years ahead to project in the top-right corner; this preference is saved and synced. Free accounts see up to 6 months ahead in monthly view only; Premium unlocks the full range plus the yearly view.

Investment Projection

Projects the compound growth of your investment items โ€” entirely separate from your regular accounts. Each item has its own balance and its own settings, so items with very different rates or terms (say, a savings deposit vs. a stock portfolio) can be modeled side by side and summed into one combined projection. If you have no investment item with a balance or contribution, this card is hidden with an info message in its place. Each item lets you set:

FieldDescription
BalanceThe item's own current balance โ€” its starting point, entirely independent of any other item.
Term contributionHow much is added to this item's balance at the start of every term.
Term (days)The compounding period in days โ€” for example 30 for monthly, 90 for quarterly, or 365 for yearly. Interest and tax for this item are only applied once this many days have passed.
Interest (annual)This item's own annual interest rate, prorated to match its term length when applied.
TaxThis item's own tax rate, deducted from that term's interest before it's added to the balance.
CurrencyEach item can use a different currency; every amount is converted to your base currency when the items are summed for the combined projection.
Monthly / Yearly viewToggle between monthly and yearly rows. Monthly view requires Premium.
How far aheadEnter the number of months or years to project, matching whichever view is selected. Saved and synced.
Tip: The current month always shows each item's balance exactly as entered, with no interest or contribution applied yet. From there, the term contribution is added at the start of every term; once that full term has elapsed, its interest (prorated to the term length) is applied to the balance, tax is deducted from that interest, and the cycle then repeats for the next term. A shared Raise rate and raises per year, set once in Edit (๐Ÿ“ˆ), gradually increase every item's term contribution over time.

Free accounts see up to 5 years ahead in yearly view only; Premium unlocks unlimited range plus the monthly view.

Edit

The Edit tab is where you manage all your financial data. Use the icon tabs at the top to switch between sections.

๐Ÿฆ Accounts

Each account has a name, balance, and currency. Accounts can be Payment (default) or Savings type โ€” this changes which inputs appear and how the account behaves in projections:

TypeBehavior
PaymentA negative balance is treated as debt and enters the debt payoff plan; a positive balance contributes to payment capacity. You can set an interest + tax rate for negative balances.
SavingsCannot go negative and never enters the debt plan. Instead you set an interest rate, a tax rate, and an optional monthly contribution โ€” this account then feeds the Savings Projection card and can be linked to a bucket.

Use Archive to hide an account without deleting it โ€” archiving itself is always free, but if you're on the free plan and already at your account limit, un-archiving an account is blocked until you either free up a slot or upgrade. Use Balance Edit to add or subtract from a balance directly, or Balance Transfer to move money between two accounts (currency is converted automatically if they differ).

ButtonAction
+Add a new account
Reorder accounts
Archive account (hides without deleting)
Delete account

โœ๏ธ Balance Edit

Add or subtract an amount directly from a single account's balance โ€” useful for a quick correction or a one-off adjustment that doesn't need its own income/expense item (e.g. reconciling with your real bank balance). Select the account, choose Add or Subtract, enter the amount, and confirm.

๐Ÿ”„ Balance Transfer

Transfer funds between two accounts. Select From and To accounts, enter an amount, and tap Transfer. Use the โ‡„ swap button to quickly reverse the direction. If the two accounts use different currencies, the amount is automatically converted at the current exchange rate.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Income Items

Each income item has a name, amount, and optional start/end dates. Use start/end dates for temporary income (e.g. a freelance contract that ends in June).

ButtonAction
+Add new income item
Reorder items
Include or exclude from projection
Archive item (hides without deleting)
Delete income item
Reset last transaction date (removes the โœ“ badge)
Tip: If you leave Start/End as "No date", the item is treated as permanent and always active.

๐Ÿ’ธ Expense Items

Same structure as income items. Expenses reduce your monthly payment capacity. Optional start/end dates let you model temporary costs.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Receive Income / ๐Ÿ’ธ Pay Expense

These sections let you log that a specific income item was received or an expense was paid โ€” or plan one for a future date:

1
Select the item

Choose the income or expense item from the first dropdown.

2
Select the account

Choose which account the money goes into or comes out of.

3
Set the date

Defaults to today. Pick today or a past date to record it as already done; pick a future date to just plan it for later.

4
Tap Receive / Pay

If the date is today or earlier, the account balance updates immediately and a green/red โœ“ badge appears on the item. If the date is in the future, the balance doesn't change yet โ€” a blue date badge appears instead, marking it as planned.

Tip: The badge only appears in the month card that matches the transaction (or planned) date. In other months, it's hidden.
Tip: A planned item never applies itself automatically, even once its date arrives โ€” Bucktory doesn't move money on its own. You must tap Receive/Pay again on or after that date to actually record it and turn the blue badge into a โœ“.

๐Ÿชฃ Buckets

Buckets are savings goals. Each bucket has a name, its own currency, and an optional target amount โ€” setting a goal is completely free, available to everyone. Once a bucket has a goal, it automatically appears in the Projection tab's Goal order and Bucket Fill Plan, and Bucktory calculates exactly which month it will be reached. You can link savings accounts to a bucket; their balances count toward that bucket's progress and are shown as badges on the bucket in Summary.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Projection settings

A fifth tab in Edit (๐Ÿ“ˆ) holds global projection assumptions used across the Projection tab. Two fields here matter more than the rest:

FieldWhat it means
Monthly deficit interest rateThe interest rate applied specifically to a shortfall month โ€” a month where your Target Payment Plan shows a negative payment capacity, meaning your income couldn't cover that month's expenses and account interest.
Monthly deficit tax rateThe tax/fee rate applied on top of the deficit interest above, in the same shortfall months.
Tip: These two rates are separate from each account's own interest rate. They only kick in when a month's payment capacity goes negative โ€” Bucktory treats that shortfall as debt that's deepening rather than shrinking, and applies these rates to it so the true cost of a bad month is never hidden. You'll see this as "Deficit interest + tax" in the Target Payment Plan and as the "ekFaiz" contribution behind the scenes in the Net Worth Projection. If you leave these at 0%, a negative month simply carries forward without any extra penalty cost.

Settings

Access settings from the โš™๏ธ gear icon in the header. Key options:

SettingDescription
LanguageChoose from 12 supported languages. Changes apply immediately.
ThemeFour modes: Light, Gray, Dark, and Auto (follows your system). All four are free. Accent colors (the highlight color used throughout the app) require Premium.
CurrencySet your base currency automatically (based on your language) or pick a custom one. Each account, income, expense and bucket can also have its own currency โ€” all totals convert to your base currency automatically using live exchange rates, so you only ever see one final number.
Date formatChoose between DD/MM/YYYY, MM/DD/YYYY, YYYY-MM-DD, and others.

๐Ÿ’ฑ Exchange Rates

Rates update automatically in the background; tap Refresh in the card header to force an update on demand, and the card shows when rates were last updated.

Extra currencies โ€” Premium users can add currencies beyond their base one (gold XAU, Bitcoin, and 60+ others) from this card. Once added, an extra currency can also be picked as your base/main currency in the Currency setting above โ€” you're not limited to your original choice. To remove an extra currency, simply tap its chip; it's immediately dropped from the rates list.

Custom currency โ€” Premium users can also define a fully custom currency with any code and symbol. Unlike the built-in currencies, its exchange rate isn't fetched automatically โ€” you enter and maintain it by hand. After typing a new rate, tap the โœ“ button to confirm the change; tap the โœ• button to delete the custom currency entirely.

๐Ÿ’พ Backup & Restore

Premium feature. Backup saves a snapshot of your data to your Firebase account; Restore replaces your current data with that snapshot. This is separate from Cloud Sync (which is continuous) โ€” think of it as an on-demand safety checkpoint.

โ„น๏ธ About

At the bottom of Settings, the About rows link out to this User Guide, the FAQ, the Changelog (what's new in each version), and the Privacy Policy โ€” each opens in your browser.
